North Carolina has 100 counties, with names inspired by everything from rivers and mountains to Native American tribes and notable people. But have you ever wondered how Moore County got its name?
Moore County was formed in 1784 and named for Alfred Moore, a North Carolinian with quite the résumé.
Born in Brunswick County in 1755, Moore served as a captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He later served in the North Carolina Senate and state legislature, was North Carolina Attorney General, became a Superior Court judge, and eventually served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Alfred Moore died in 1810 and is buried near Southport, North Carolina. A marker at his burial site notes that Moore County was named in his honor.
But here’s my favorite part of the story: There is no record that Alfred Moore ever actually visited Moore County!
More than 240 years later, we’re still saying his name every day. I wonder what he would think of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and the rest of the county that ended up carrying his name!
